Thousands of houses and public facilities in four regencies in South Sulawesi have been submerged in floodwater
housands of houses and public facilities in four regencies in South Sulawesi have been submerged in floodwater.
The affected regencies are Wajo, Soppeng, Sidenreng Rappang and Enrekang. The worst-hit area is Wajo as floodwater has inundated 23,000 homes, schools, places of worship, markets and health centers.
One person has been reported missing in Belawa district in Wajo. 'As of Tuesday afternoon, we haven't found the missing resident,' said Wajo Disaster Mitigation Agency head Andi Sapada Sangaji on Tuesday.
Affected families in the regency have fled to safer ground. The flooding, Andi said, occurred when Lake Tempe overflowed after three days of heavy rain.
The shallow lake, which the Bila and Cenranae rivers run into, can no longer accommodate rainwater. Homes around the lake experience annual flooding. 'This is only the beginning of the rainy season. The peak of the season will be in August,' said Andi.
Wajo administration has opened a shelter, public kitchen and tools to help residents cut off by floodwater.
