our comments on the fatal traffic incident that killed six people and involved a 13-year-old boy behind the wheel of one of the vehicles:

It is unbelievable that the boy could sneak out and take the car in the middle of the night without anybody caring.

Now 13 families are suffering because of his actions.

It is clear that the father is responsible for the acts of his under-age child. All the families should sue the father and claim damages through civil court proceedings.

Aside from the fact that the parents must be held responsible for allowing a minor to drive recklessly and kill other people.

I just can'€™t help wondering how many accidents will happen before Jasa Marga, the toll road operator, is held responsible for the quality and strength of the central reservation, which looks so flimsy and doesn'€™t seem to offer any protection for motorists.

It'€™s high time that Jasa Marga disclosed the quality and strength of the supposedly '€œprotective'€ guard rail. Does it comply with international safety standards?

What? Placing the blame squarely on the children/teenager? Children and teenagers are bound to act stupid. It'€™s the parents'€™ duties to guide them and not to facilitate the kind of stupidity which could lead to a tragedy like this.

Sure, we could all argue for the systematic culture, mentality and environment which lead to blah blah blah the usual boilerplate blah blah, but everyone in charge seem to search for an easy black sheep to put the blame on (as is wont to do for cases like this).

If it could not be helped, so be it. Make an example of the parents then, not the misbehaving child. Put the child in a mandatory road traffic safety course or something intended to rehabilitate, sure '€” but if you want to make deterrence against future cases, aim for the parents, which is the enabler in this case.

The deterrent really needs to be applied to the irresponsible parent. Perhaps in this case if the father and owner of the car that killed six people and wounding nine others were to suffer some ruin to his future other parents might at least notice.

This devastating case is supposed to be another good moment to expose bribery and corruption at the police department. Under age driving a vehicle is common in Indonesia.

Not only junior school students but also elementary school students and in some cases, they even have a '€œlegal'€ driving license.

This legal license can be obtained by paying merely US$25 for a motorcycle and approximately $200 for a car.

In the case of Ahmad Dani'€™s sons, the police should pray that Dul does not possess a legal driving license, because these infringements will bounce back to their department.

Indonesia should also reconsider the law regulating maximum amount of persons in cars, because based on the official statement, there was 11 people inside the car that lost 6 of its passengers. Parents consent is one of the main issues
regarding this matter.

Many parents claim that their children are able to navigate the roads. We need to understand that this is not about being '€œable to'€, but rather about being '€œadequate to'€ (both fiscally and mentally).

Topic of the day Low-cost cars

Low-cost '€œgreen'€ cars with prices ranging from Rp 77 million (US$6,608) hit the market this week. They will significantly increase the number of cars on the already congested streets of big cities like Jakarta. What do you think?
