oreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Hong Kong planned to open an economic-representative office in Jakarta to strengthen economic relations.
'Hong Kong authorities plan to open an economic representative office in Jakarta as part of its commitment to boost economic relations between Hong Kong and Indonesia,' Marty said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He was speaking on the sidelines of accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who was monitoring the APEC Summit facilities at the Nusa Dua Convention Center, Bali, on Sunday evening.
The minister said the director of the Chief Executive's Office Edward Yau Tang Wah conveyed the plan to President Yudhoyono during a bilateral meeting at the Sofitel Hotel, Nusa Dua, on Sunday afternoon.
'Bapak President welcomed the plan,' said Marty, while saying he did not know when the plan would be realized. He added that during the bilateral meeting various issues, particularly on trade and investment, were covered.
Hong Kong, Marty said bridged economic relations between Indonesia and China. 'Both parties discussed how the special role of Hong Kong, as an economy, could serve as a door to China,' said Marty.
Apart from trade and investment, the bilateral meeting also touched on the 120,000 Indonesian citizens currently living in Hong Kong. (ebf)
