A

new study conducted by leading global travel search site Skyscanner shows that 80 percent of Indonesian travelers pick their holiday destinations based on Visa requirements, suggesting that visa applications can be a painful process.

According to the survey of 7,000 respondents from Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Korea, Thailand, India and China, 81 percent of Asians are in favour of an EU style single visa system across ASEAN countries.

In addition to support for a common visa system across Southeast Asia, a visa reciprocity system between countries was supported by 87 percent of total participants, with a staggering 90 percent of participants from Indonesia in favor of it.

The survey results also suggest that many Indonesian travelers find visa application processes complex with 13 percent of them saying they had made errors with applications and an additional 20 percent saying they have had a visa application rejected.

'Indonesian travelers are often unable or find it difficult to visit many popular holiday destinations because of their passport. It can be frustrating for many, especially travel enthusiasts as they are put off due to the fact that they need to first apply for a visa before traveling. Based on our survey results, it is clear that most Indonesian travelers would rather save themselves the trouble and pick a destination closer to home, which would allow them to plan their holiday with ease,' Skyscanner's Market Development Manager for Indonesia Tika Larasati said in an email.

"Essentially, traveling should be a fun and stress-free activity. The main purpose of traveling should be to visit beautiful places around the world. However, for many Indonesian tourists, going abroad seems to be an issue as Indonesian passport holders are often required to apply for visas to many countries.'

'The application process is often long and could even face the possibility of rejection. Based on our survey results, the more difficult it is to apply for a visa, the more demotivated they are to visit the country. We are fortunate that Indonesia is a country with an abundance of beautiful travel destination and tourists can choose between exotic beaches and scenic volcanoes to delicious culinary tours.'
