Balinese migrant worker dies after jumping off cruise ship

A

migrant worker from Bali named INyoman Gede Bagiada, who was employed by Constellation Cruise ship, was reportedto have died after jumping into the sea for unknown reasons. His jump wascaught by security cameras.

"We have coordinated with the Indonesian Foreign Ministry and a search has been conducted by US Navy officers but he hasn't been found," said head of the Workers Protection and Placement Agency (BP3TKI) I Wayan Pageh said in Denpasar on Friday as quoted by Antara.

Wayan said that according to reports from the Fort Lauderdale Police, Florida, the incident occurred on Jan. 29, 2014, at 2 a.m. local time when the cruise ship was sailing on the Yucatan Strait between Mexican and Cuban waters, around 300 miles from the United States.

Based on a local police investigation, the man, who worked as a cook, intentionally jumped into the sea as recorded in the surveillance cameras.

The incident was believed to have been caused by his frustrations over the diabetes he suffered and the fact that he was not given allowances or permission from his employer -- Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL) -- to take time off to visit his family in Bali as disclosed by his friends.

The Indonesian Consulate General in Houston, Texas, has coordinated with the RCCL to immediately inform the family and also compensate his beneficiaries. The RCCL agency was completing the necessary documents for the compensation. (krb)
