t least 2,156 undocumented migrant workers from Indonesia have been caught in Malaysia by the country's immigration office in its latest series of operations to crack down on migrants.
In total, 5,508 undocumented foreign workers employed in Malaysia were arrested between Jan. 21 and Feb. 21, 2014.
In addition to the Indonesians, 786 Myanmarese, 596 Bangladeshis, 589 Filipinos and others from Nepal, India and Pakistan have been detained.
'We caught them from 59 delinquent employers. We have deported every one of the 5,261 migrants to their respective countries,' Malaysia's immigration office deputy chairman Datuk Sakib Kusmi said in Kuala Lumpur on Monday as quoted by Antara news agency.
In cooperation with related agencies, the immigration office conducted 794 operations over the last month involving some 9,000 officers.
'Malaysia has eased visa application requirements to enter the country so please abide by the rules,' he said.
'2014 is the Visit Malaysia Year and so we welcome visitors as a way to improve the country's economy." (krb)
