My Gadget: Jono Armstrong: Looking for functionality in gadgets

JP/R. Berto WedhatamaA

Jonathan '€œJono'€ Armstrong, the bassist of the band Gugun Blues Shelter, prefers to keep his gadgets simple and functional to assist him as he goes about his daily life.

Jono, who first arrived in Indonesia by way of Aceh at the turn of the century, has been making his name in the Indonesian showbiz world after his band received phenomenal recognition a few years back and was offered the chance to entertain audiences on TV comedy shows.

While Gugun Blues Shelter has now toured the globe, sharing the stage with big names, the 33-year-old musician has become a familiar face on Indonesian television. Needless to say, he is a busy bassist.

Staying connected

I use an iPhone 5 plus a Bolt MiFi modem to boost my Internet signal. I choose to use iPhone because it'€™s
simple to use. My family and most of my friends also use the same device so I can video-call them with FaceTime.

I use the gadget for instant messaging through WhatsApp and BlackBerry Messenger [BBM], photo editing and connecting through social media sites like Path and Twitter.

I also use it to listen to music. However, I am totally against free downloads and piracy because I'€™m a musician and I know how it feels to be ripped off. I use iTunes to download albums and songs, which I pay for and the quality is also great.

Playing games

I play Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) a lot with my kids. We'€™re currently playing the open world action-adventure video game Grand Theft Auto V and we'€™ve almost completed it. Every other game I have on my iPhone.

When I get home, I spend time with my kids on the PS3. On the road, for probably 75 percent of my day, I use the smartphone for chatting and sending emails.

From the moment I wake up, I'€™m checking my phone for my schedule and also planning for the day in the chat group with my band. I use my phone for many hours a day using GPS and my iTunes collection while enjoying the traffic.

Prolonging gadget life

I usually keep my gadgets until the time comes when I have to change. I kept my old BlackBerry for three years and took good care of it until I started researching about iPhones and the advantages they offered.

I bought my iPhone 5 just after it was released last year. It was time for an upgrade and I chose to buy the phone after a few months of research and because most of my mates and family were using it too.

I would love to buy a MacBook but it'€™s just because I want it '€” I don'€™t need it. I probably won'€™t buy it.

I once bought a fake iPad when I went to China. It worked for a week then it crashed so I threw it away.
