P

resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gave 200 high ranking police- and military- personnel an irate talking down after, he said, a number of active generals had failed to remain impartial in the led up to the July 9 presidential election.

'It's not slander. It's a fact ['¦] campaign representatives have approached a number of high-ranking officers,' he said, as quoted by kompas.com, during a meeting at the Defense Ministry on Monday.

In his speech, Yudhoyono hinted that he knew those who had pledged support and that this behavior was underhand as he remained the supreme commander of the armed forces.

'The campaign representatives apparently suggested [that the] current president was just 'a leader of a sinking ship'. They said it was better to support the new president,' Yudhoyono said.

He stressed that all officers should uphold Sapta Marga (the soldiers' commitment) and the soldiers oath, which described the ethics and values of the police and military.

'I initiated this meeting and I want the issues discussed to be made public as we are in an election year, which is always filled with hatred and suspicion,' said the President in the meeting.

Indonesian Military (TNI) commander, Gen. Moeldoko; Army chief of staff, Gen. Budiman; Air Force chief of staff, Air Chief Marshal Ida Bagus Putu Dunia; and Navy chief, Adm. Marsetio were all present.

Last week, a Constitutional Court ruling banned active members of the police and military from voting in any presidential election following a judicial review on the 2008 Presidential Election Law, which had filed by a number of activists and experts.

The government has long prohibited military and police personnel from voting, however, Article 260 of the 2008 Presidential Election Law only barred them from voting in the 2009 presidential election. (gda/ebf)
