Seven prostitution centers face closure

At least seven red-light districts in Malang regency, East Java, are to be shuttered by the end of November.

Malang administration secretary Abdul Malik said on Saturday that the prostitution centers would be given a deadline of November 28, 2014 to shut down business, the date of the regency'€™s 1,254th anniversary.

'€œThe closures will be a gift for the regency'€™s anniversary,'€ Malik said, as quoted on Saturday by Antara news agency.

The seven red-light districts to be closed are Suko in Sumberpucung district, Kebobang in Wonosari, Kalikudu in Pujon, Slorok in Kromengan, Girun in Gondanglegi, Embong Miring in Ngantang and Sendangbiru in Sumbermanjing Wetan district.

Malik said the buildings of the red-light districts would be converted into new businesses. The one in Suko, for example, will be converted into a family karaoke center, while another one in Kebobang will be turned into a domestic industrial center focusing in local food products.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Malang regency branch and the local Interfaith Communication Forum (FKUB) welcomed the announcement, having previously urged Regent Rendra Kresna to close down the prostitution districts.

'€œFKUB will be at the frontline in the closure of the red light districts. MUI also gives support to the closure,'€ Malang FKUB chairman Mahmud Zubaidi said.
