lag carrier Garuda Indonesia and the Beijing-based ASEAN-China Center conducted a capacity-building workshop in Jakarta on Friday in order to attract more Chinese tourists to Indonesia as well as to serve them better.

The workshop, attended by Indonesian Ambassador to China and Mongolia Soegeng Rahardjo, ASEAN-China Center secretary general Ma Mingqiang and a number of teachers and practitioners from the Guilin Institute of Tourism China, is part of a program to upgrade the skills of tourism practitioners in ASEAN.

"We understand that every tourist has a different character, including Chinese visitors, and we are hoping the workshop can help tourism professionals in Indonesia to better understand what Chinese tourists need, thus we can better serve them and increase their visits to destinations in our country," Garuda Indonesia vice president for the China region I Wayan Subagja said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Friday.

In the workshop, the participants were given materials on the history and culture of China, its tourism, service guides and standards in China and how to respond to emergencies during trips to China.

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data, Chinese visitors were among the top-five tourist arrivals in the country.

Recent BPS data has revealed that the number of visitors from China to Indonesia in June 2014 rose by 9.28 percent compared to the same month last year.

Currently, Garuda flies daily to a number of major cities in China from Jakarta and Denpasar, Bali such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou with its Boeing B737-800 Next Generation (NG) narrow-body aircraft and Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 wide-body aircraft. (nfo)
