ational Crafts Council Yogyakarta chapter executive director Roni Guritno said that World Craft Council (WCC) was expected to name Yogyakarta the world's batik city.
He said that he had delivered the idea to the WCC's members during their recent visit to a batik center in Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta on Sunday, during which they were able to witness firsthand the process of batik making.
He explained that the WCC should name Yogyakarta as the world's batik city because the city was the center of batik crafting in the country.
'Regarding batik, Yogyakarta is really complete, in historical, economic and artistic aspects' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said that naming Yogyakarta as the world's batik city would provide many benefits to city residents, especially in terms of the economy.
He said that the WCC members had promised to promote batik in many countries in a bid to make people around the world more familiar with the product.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) named Indonesia's handmade batik a world heritage in 2009. (alz)
