ustralian surfer Peter James AlexanderMaynard, 46, is believed to have gone surfing before disappearing from NusaLembongan Island, Bali.
Maynard's family, who arrived in Bali on Thursday evening to help with the search, said they thought the father-of-three had left his hotel room wearing a blue surfing vest and carrying a surfboard.
'He was wearing a bright blue surfing vest [...] dark-colored board shorts and his surfboard is white,' John Maynard, Peter's brother, said Friday on behalf of the family.
'We understand that the ocean conditions were relatively benign. We will continue to work with the local police, the Australian consulate and search and rescue authorities in the hope that we can find Peter and bring this matter to an end,' John Maynard said, adding that the family asked that their privacy be respected.
The alarm was raised by hotel staff after Maynard failed to checked out on Aug. 28, while his belongings were still intact in his hotel room.
Nusa Penida Police chief Comr. Nyoman Suarsika said the family had confirmed that Maynard had traveled from Australia with three surfboards, one of which was missing, thus leading investigators to assume he went surfing.
Suarsika added that Maynard had last spoken with his wife by phone from Denpasar on Aug. 22. 'He told her he was going to Lembongan,' Suarsika said.
Maynard's family said he was in good health and had no medical conditions. --JP
