Thick fog allegedly originating from forest fires covered Pekanbaru, Riau on Saturday, causing low visibility and pollution.
According to the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) report, the level of pollution has reached 70.
Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport manager Ibnu Hasan said visibility had fallen to only 500 meters, below the aviation standard.
'The visibility of 500 meters began at 1:45 p.m.,' he said on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Pekanbaru chapter analyst Sanya Gautami said the fog had likely come from South Sumatra. However, she said that several hot spots in Riau had likely also contributed to creating the fog.
According to information from National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head of data Agus Wibowo, Riau had nine hot spots, while South Sumatra had 264. Meanwhile, Bangka Belitung had 22 hot spots, Lampung 15 spots, Jambi eight spots and North Sumatra one. (alz)
