aiwan and Indonesia have announced their intention to extend the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation between the two countries that has been in force since 2001.
Taiwanese Agriculture Minister Bao-Ji Chen said on Friday that the extension of the MoU would help the two countries collaborate in the agricultural sector.
Bao-Ji's statement followed a meeting with Indonesian Agriculture Minister Suswono at the 3rd APEC Ministerial Meeting on Food Security in Beijing, China, on Friday.
During the meeting, several Taiwanese agriculture business representatives expressed their commitment to extending the cooperation with Indonesia, as some had already invested in the country.
Commenting on the extension, Suswono said that the agricultural cooperation between Jakarta and Taipei had been bearing fruit; the Taiwanese Jambu Kristal (guava), for example, is increasingly popular in Indonesia.
'We are also in the process of collaborating with Taiwan in developing certain vegetables,' Suswono said as quoted by kompas.com.
He went on to express his hope that the continuing collaboration would drive up investment in Indonesia.
'Investment in agriculture is very open here, especially in the Master Plan for the Acceleration and the Expansion of the Indonesian Economy (MP3EI)'s six corridors, particularly in areas outside Java,' he added.
A delegation of Taiwanese investors visited the Industry Ministry in August to express their interest in investing in the archipelago, particularly in the solar cell, electronics and petrochemical industries. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
