he leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction at the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, says the party will still rely on figures from the Sukarno family to guide leadership transitions in the future.
'It's not written in the party's rules that party chairperson must be a descendent of [former president] Sukarno, but it is a matter of ethics. Internally, [having such a figure at the helm of the party] could serve as a bond for the party,' she said.
Puan made the statement in response to a proposal to nominate her mother, Megawati Soekarnoputri, the second child of Sukarno, as the chairwoman of the PDI-P for the 2014-2020 term, during the party's national congress in Semarang, Central Java, over the weekend.
The appointment, she said, was aimed at maintaining popular support for the party, especially at the grass roots level, as many were supporters of Sukarno.
Tjahjo Kumolo, the party's secretary-general, previously said the PDI-P had to be led by a descendant of Sukarno.
'A descendant of Bung Karno must lead this party, as long as it exists,' he said on Monday.
