he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Riau Governor Annas Maamun a suspect on Friday afternoon after its investigators caught the governor red-handed allegedly accepting bribes from a businessman in Cibubur, West Java, the previous day.

'We have arrested two suspects, including AM, the Riau Governor,' KPK chief Abraham Samad said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said that the businessman, initials GM, who works in the palm oil industry, was suspected of paying the bribe worth Rp 2 billion (US$166,541) to Annas, who is an executive of the Golkar Party.

Abraham revealed that GM allegedly gave the money to Annas in return for a permit to use land in Riau.

Annas is the first serving governor to be arrested by the commission.

The KPK recently also nabbed Karawang regent Ade Swara for allegedly receiving bribes from a businessman with regards to the issuance of a land permit in Karawang, West Java.

Annas' lawyer Eva Nora confirmed that his client, along with his client's wife and an adjutant, had been arrested by the KPK. (alz/nfo)(++++)
