undreds of monkeys from the mountains have invaded homes in Cikakak village in Wangon district, Banyumas regency, Central Java, over the past few days in search of food.
Their food supplies in the forest are believed to have run short due to the current drought.
A number of local residents claim that the monkeys would return to the forest only after they had been given food.
'If they are not given food, they circle a house and invade the kitchen when the tenants are out,' Sukarno, 43, of Cikakak village, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
He said the hungry monkeys came in waves in groups during the day. 'They don't come at night, so we're safe. However, the uninvited guests return in the morning and expect to be given food,' said Sukarno.
Another village resident, Wagimin, said during the dry season hundreds of monkeys would descend from the mountain. 'They have likely run out of food in the forest, so they descend on the village to get food from their human brothers,' he said.
On the one hand the monkey invasion has become free entertainment, but on the other hand they have caused fear among a number of residents as they often raid homes and steal items left on the dining table.
Banyumas regency administration staff member Heri, 45, said Cikakak village was regarded as a spiritual destination with the presence of a holy tomb and hundreds of monkeys as the main attraction.
