he city administration inaugurated the head and deputy head of Jakarta City Council for the 2014-2019 period on Friday.
The council will be headed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle's (PDI-P) Prasetyo Edi Marsudi with four deputy heads; the Gerindra Party's Muhammad Taufik, the Prosperous Justice Party's (PKS) Triwisaksana, the United Development Party's (PPP) Abraham 'Lulung' Lunggana and the Democratic Party's (PD) Ferrial Sofyan.
The senior positions were allocated to the parties as a result of the respective number of seats they won in the council in the April 9 legislative election.
The five were sworn in by Jakarta High Court chief Made Rawa Aryawan at the council building in Central Jakarta. Both Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and Deputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama attended the inauguration.
Amid rising tension between Ahok and several councilors, Prasetyo said members must stick together and cooperate with the city administration to build a better Jakarta.
Lulung and Taufik have both repeatedly criticized Ahok. Lulung has even threatened to put an end to Ahok's political career.
'We are councilors of Indonesia's capital city. We must stay solid and work together and not let our differences get in the way of our work,' Prasetyo told The Jakarta Post before the inauguration.
Prasetyo said the council's priorities included resolving traffic congestion, flooding, education and land disputes.
Meanwhile, Taufik said the council would not hinder the city administration. However, he criticized what he described as Ahok's
attitude.
'He is a city official. He should change his attitude and be careful of what he says. For example, he cannot just scold officers in front of the media. What will people think?' Taufik told reporters after the
inauguration.
The City Council for the 2014-2019 term consists of 106 members from 10 political parties, comprising the PDI-P, Gerindra, the PKS, the PPP, the PD, Hanura, the Golkar Party, the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Nasdem Party and the National Mandate Party (PAN).
