ndonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher Emerson Yuntho said on Thursday that his group was not surprised that the United States-based Gallup polling company had named Indonesia the most corrupt country in Southeast Asia.
'It [the result of Gallup's research] is not odd,' he said, commenting on the Gallup report published on Oct. 15, as quoted by tempo.co.
He said that there were many reasons why the country deserved to be named the most corrupt country in the region.
Indonesia had many corrupt people, proven by the high number of people the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had nabbed, he said.
He also said that there were many institutions that continued to implement red-tape bureaucracy. Therefore, such a system made investors reluctant to pour investment into Indonesia. According to him, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had also failed to take on corruption seriously 'Many of Yudhoyono's ministers have been implicated in graft cases. Yudhoyono selected the wrong people for his Cabinet,' he said.
The KPK has named several of Yudhoyono's ministers graft suspects, such as former health minister Siti Fadilah Supari, former youth and sports affairs minister Andi Mallarangeng, former energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik, and former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali.
