n order to be more efficient, music producer, festival director and musician Eki Puradiredja carries only a limited number of gadgets, each with a clear and specific function.
Eki used to wield numerous smartphones and computer tablets, said the artist who is also popularly known by his stage name, EQ.
'I used to carry around many gadgets, but I found it to be wasteful,' said the 45-year-old.
Eki's name surfaced in the Indonesian music world when he released fusion jazz works with Redyanto Heru Nurcahyo in a duo called Humania in the mid-1990s. The duo released more albums until 2000, when they decided to take a hiatus from each other.
Eki continued his work in music, producing albums for well-known musicians like Indra Lesmana, Ermy Kullit, and Maliq & D'Essentials. He has also worked as program coordinator for Java Festival Production, curating musicians to perform at the company's annual festivals: Java Jazz, Rockinland and Soulnation.
He also tried his hand as a restaurateur by opening a bar, Tabac, which he described as an idealistic enterprise.
While preparing for next year's Java Jazz edition, Eki produced a new band, Art of Tree, which recently released its eponymous debut album.
Apple iPad
I use the tablet for entertainment purposes and for social media. The iPhone was not satisfying enough for Instagram, Path and Twitter, so I manage them from the iPad. I also keep my favorite music albums on the tablet.
I play some games on it, but not many. I'm trying to get my toddler daughter, Quenra, to not be attracted to gadgets. I don't want her to rely on gadgets for now. It works for now, but I don't know for the years to come. Kids these days get hooked on gadgets really early and they are really good at using them.
Blackberry Bold
I use the phone strictly for communication purposes. I don't use it more for anything else. I used to own an iPhone, but I found it to be redundant because I also carry an iPad and a laptop. I feel it is easier to communicate through a simple phone.
Turntable
The [Apple MacBook Pro] laptop is my work station. I do all my work there: managing emails, planning programs, writing proposals and all of that. I also keep my whole music library on the laptop. I want to be able to use it for DJing. Honestly, I prefer to use a turntable and record disks. Nowadays, you look stupid bringing up all that vinyl music, but I find music played from records to have more character and warmth. It's old school.
