ead of the Elections Supervisory Committee (Bawaslu) in Central Java, Teguh Purnomo, has said 17 out of 35 regencies and municipalities in the province are scheduled to hold direct elections of regional heads in 2015.

He said the committee made the decision after holding a discussion with related parties concerning, particularly, the heated controversy over the 2014 Regional Elections (Pilkada) Law which mandated the replacement of direct elections of regional heads with indirect elections.

Teguh said local administrations in the 17 regencies and municipalities in Central Java had previously faced a dilemma as to whether or not they could still hold direct elections as the time was getting close for them to choose new leaders.

'€œWe, together with the province'€™s General Elections Commission [KPUD], coordinated the matter with several related parties and we have finally got an answer that the regional-head elections in the17 regencies and municipalities can still take place using direct elections,'€ said Teguh in a press statement distributed to journalists in Purwokerto on Monday.

He said the committee'€™s decision to allow direct elections of the regional heads was based on the government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) No.1/2014 on the Election of Governors, Regents and Mayors issued by former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to replace Law No.22/2014, which stipulated the election of governors, regents and mayors by regional legislative councils (DPRD).

'€œWe have ordered all election supervisory committees in the 17 regencies and municipalities to immediately establish similar committees for village and district levels,'€ said Teguh.

The province'€™s KPUD head Joko Purnomo said the administrations of the 17 regencies had received instructions on the organizing of direct elections of regional heads in their respective areas.

They comprise four municipalities -- Magelang, Pekalongan, Semarang, and Surakarta '€“ and 13 regencies, namely Blora, Boyolali, Kebumen, Kendal, Klaten, Pemalang, Purbalingga, Purworejo, Rembang, Semarang, Sukoharjo, Wonogiri and Wonosobo.

The direct elections will be held between May and July 2015. (ebf)(++++)
