Capturing those awkward yet funny moments

Forget about bringing your digital camera for your next sightseeing trip out of town.

The Nokia Lumia 930, now freely available in stores after pre-orders wrapped up, keeps up the tradition of powerful cameras for which the brand is famous.

'€œThe Nokia Lumia 930 sports a 20-megapixel camera that supports PureView technology, such as optical image stabilization,'€ Wirda Haryani, Microsoft Devices product marketing manager, said.

The resolution of the smartphone, hence, outdoes Samsung S5 with its 16-megapixel camera and the iPhone 6 with its 8-megapixel camera.

'€œWe want to give consumers the ultimate experience in cameras, screens, audio and recording,'€ she added.

Supported by ZEISS optics, the Nokia Lumia 930 boasts new and enhanced imaging features. One of them is Living Image. Instead of just taking a static snapshot, the smartphone records moments less than a second before a photo is snapped.

This allows users to capture those awkward yet funny movements of someone preparing to strike a pose, or the instant someone jumps in to photobomb the picture.

To take advantage of this feature, users must activate it in the settings and the smartphone will automatically apply Living Images to all photos taken, which can then be viewed in the camera roll.

The Nokia Lumia 930 also sports an enhanced camera roll, which continues to display the animated version of photos taken with Living Images. In addition, photos taken with other camera features, such as Cinemagraphs, and tagged with a location, will also appear animated in the camera roll for easy viewing.

Besides clear images, the smartphone captures clean videos, as well, in terms of image and sound.

'€œThe smartphone records audio using four microphones that reduce noise distortions,'€ Wirda pointed out.

When tested at an indoor musical performance, the smartphone did capture the singer'€™s voice well, minus raspy sounds due to echoing and the like.

Viewing pleasure is reinforced by the 5-inch, full high definition display of 1080 X 1920 pixels. The display features of Nokia Lumia 930 is hence, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S5 which sports a 5.1 inch, fully HD screen.

Yet, the Nokia Lumia 930 has a ClearBlack feature to its display, which means that the screen remains crisp even when viewed under glaring, overhead lighting '€” a much-needed function given the intense sunlight washing over Jakarta.

From a hardware perspective, the smartphone is embedded with a quad-core, 2.2 gigahertz processor, and is LTE ready. Unfortunately, Indonesia has yet to have LTE mobile networks.

In terms of its operating system, the Nokia Lumia 930 comes with the latest Windows 8.1 software which comes with tweaks such as a pull-down notification panel that displays emails, texts and Facebook updates.

According to Wirda, the Microsoft application store currently has at least 250,000 applications, with many of the popular apps already available.

'€œOur social apps are complete, which is good since Indonesians love those kinds of apps,'€ she said.

However, although the app store has expanded, it still has to do much to catching up with Apple'€™s and Google'€™s stores.

The Instagram app is still in its beta version, even though the photo sharing network has become the latest addiction amongst Indonesians.

All in all, the Nokia Lumia 930 is a good companion for people who enjoy taking photos beyond the standard selfie and food shots, given the intense capabilities of the camera.

However, app addicts will have to practice more patience in waiting for trending apps to appear in their full version in the app store.
