ccording to the Transportation Agency, as many as 3,000 people have died in the past five years in Jakarta due to accidents involving motorcycles.
Due to the high number of fatalities, according to agency head Muhammad Akbar, the agency would prohibit motorcycles from crossing several main roads, including from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta, as reported by beritajakarta.com.
The city administration would start testing the new rule from Jl. MH Thamrin to Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in December this year, before eventually trying out the prohibitions on other main roads.
Although there had been many protests about the new ban, Akbar insisted that it was important in order to reduce the number of fatalities.
'The public must understand that motorcycles are extremely dangerous and run a high risk of accidents that could cause death or permanent disability,' he said on Saturday.
Akbar added that the high number of fatalities was more than the number of people who died from contagious diseases in the city during the past five years.
He explained that he hoped more people would be encouraged to use public transportation after the prohibition was implemented.
