leric Fakhrurozy, who was "inaugurated" by hard-line Islam Defenders Front (FPI) as its new "Jakarta governor" on Monday afternoon, said that he would immediately go on blusukan (impromptu visits to meet the people) starting on Tuesday.
Fakhrurozy, the coordinator of the Jakarta Community Movement (GMJ), said that because he was chosen by the people he had the obligation to travel around Jakarta to understand people's problem and provide solutions.
"I was elected by the people. I understand that the Home Affairs Ministry has yet to confirm my position, but I have the right to lead my people," he said.
"If you ask me about programs, I will elaborate them to you tomorrow. But for sure, I will go on blusukan first to hear the people's complaints."
Blusukan is a method widely popularized by former Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who is now the President.
Fahrurozzi was "sworn in" by the head of the Betawi Brotherhood Forum (FBR) and member of the Jakarta Saviors Presidium, Luthfi Hakim, who stated that Fahrurozzi would begin his duties as Jakarta governor effective immediately.
The "inauguration" was made during a protest by several groups of Islamic hardliners outside the Jakarta City Council (DPRD) building against the governorship of Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama -- a Christian of Chinese descent.
In response to the movement, Ahok said that he welcomed Fahrurozzi's inauguration and hoped he could commit to the blusukan.
"It's good [that Fahrurrozi wants to do blusukan]. Jakartans will have a "governor" who is not paid by taxpayer money. We should support him," said Ahok. (ren)(++++)
