he Riau provincial administration would develop the province's coastal area more starting in 2015, in its effort to close the development gap with inland areas, acting governor Asyadjuliandi Rachman said in Pekanbaru on Monday.
"We will direct development more to coastal areas because the residents there have yet to enjoy the results of development in the province," he said as reported by Antara news agency.
He added that the provincial administration would hold a meeting between it and the city and regency administrations to reach development synergy at all levels.
Arsyadjuliandi pointed to Meranti Islands regency as an example, which he said had plenty of potential and that residents were expected to develop such potential.
"There are plenty of cash crops in Meranti, not only sago but also coffee," he said.
The acting governor added that sago could be made into cattle feed and sago rice.
He added that the provincial administration would list all facilities required by Riau's coastal area, which included the regencies of Rokah Hilir, Meranti Islands, Siak and Bengkalis as well as Dumai mayoralty.
Development gaps have caused these regions to secede from Riau and establish the Coastal Riau province, which was approved by the 2009-2014 Riau Legislative Council.
The decision will then be recommended to the Home Ministry before being deliberated at the House of Representatives.
The establishment of the Riau Islands through Law No. 25/2002 was also caused by development gaps between maritime regencies and cities when compared to those located inland on Sumatra. (nvn)(+++)
