The incident happened Monday afternoon in a middle school in Huaibei city after the teams surrounded a player with a sprained ankle, according to the Anhui provincial work safety bureau. A wall at the side of the court then collapsed, burying some people under it.

The Huaibei city government said in an online statement that police were investigating the cause of the incident and questioning school officials. It said that one of the injured was in stable condition and the other received minor injuries.

News reports carried photos of five bodies spread out on the basketball court. (***)
