he Jakarta Police will deploy 15,000 officers to maintain security during a labor rally set to involve around 50,000 workers in the capital on Wednesday.
'The officers will assemble first at 7 a.m. before being deployed to their stations. From what the workers unions informed us, the protestors will come from all over Greater Jakarta,' Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Unggung Cahyono said on Tuesday.
Separately, Confederation of Indonesian Workers Unions (KSPI) chairman Said Iqbal said that the labor rally would involve 50,000 workers grouped under 40 workers unions and was being staged to voice numerous issues, mainly the minimum-wage hike, the fuel-price hike and the soaring price of basic commodities that have weakened workers' purchasing power.
Although the protestors were scheduled to assemble at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Iqbal said that the rally would start at around 10 a.m. and take the form of a long march from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle along Jl. MH Thamrin to the Presidential Palace compound in Central Jakarta.
The rally would end in front of the Presidential Palace and the City Hall compound, he said. (***)
