he Jakarta Police said they will forbid firecrackers on New Year's Eve, emphasizing that Jakartans would also need to get permits from the police to have fireworks of more than 5 centimeters in length.
Jakarta Police spokesperson Rikwanto said Monday that the police would raid traditional markets and other places that usually sold firecrackers, adding that any firecrackers found would be confiscated.
'Fireworks of a size greater than 2 inches [5 cm] long will require permits, while every kind of firecracker is prohibited,' Rikwanto told reporters at the Jakarta Police headquarters.
He said that large-sized fireworks, which were normally used during New Year's Eve celebrations, would also be confiscated if their owner failed to show the required permit.
The National Police have deployed 145,000 police officers, supported by 16,000 military personnel and 36,125 personnel from other institutions, for Operasi Lilin (Operation Candle) in order to protect the city from security threats and traffic problems that could disrupt Christmas and New Year's celebrations.
