The design hotel'€™s name, Small House Big Door, means exactly that, no pun intended.

Nestled in a less-frequented area in downtown Seoul, the hotel was listed in '€œother spots'€ in Seoul Design Spot'€™s Open Studio program.

Designed by the Seoul-based creative design studio Design Methods, the former office building has been reshaped into a space that serves as more than just a hotel by a group of young designers and artists.

Now it houses a bistro offering all-day dining and a gallery on the ground floor, hotel rooms on the second through fourth floors and a rooftop lounge. It also has space for presentations and conferences, with projections of images splashed on the wall.

Design Methods works in a diverse range of industrial fields, from furniture, space to brands. The studio'€™s design attitude and process are strongly focused on continuous exploration while embracing new archetypes, materials, technology and simplicity.

At the hotel, its simple and light furnishings, built through its open-source designs that are available online and are easily produced, along with 3D-printed signage '€” from room and floor numbers to '€œdo not disturb'€ signs '€” are found throughout its 25 rooms.

The studio'€™s co-founder, Kihyun Kim, showed around visitors taking part in the Seoul Design Spot tour, explaining it was not easy to turn a 56-year-old office building into a hotel. But they started by focusing their attention on small details before working their way up to deal with the bigger issue, he added.

'€œWe worked on the building in the hope the guests would have a new design experience here.'€
