Puncak visitors, residents told to watch for possible landslides

T

he Bogor Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has warned visitors heading to the Puncak resort area in Bogor regency, West Java, to watch out for possible landslides in the area over the New Year period.

The head of the Bogor Regency BPBD'€™s emergency unit, Budi Aksomo, explained that part of the main road leading to Puncak near Riung Gunung had been hit by a minor landslide on Friday that covered part of the road and toppled trees after heavy rains. No casualties were reported.

The area has been hit by torrential rains for the past week.

Budi also explained that one person had been buried in a separate landslide that hit Tugu Utara village in Puncak as a result of rain pouring down on the area since Friday evening.

'€œThe body of the victim hit by that landslide has been recovered by a search and rescue team from the BPBD and is now at the family'€™s house in Caringin,'€ Budi said on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.

A rapid-response team has been assigned to all areas in Puncak that are prone to landslides and residents in the region area have been advised to be vigilant and report any signs of emergencies as soon as possible.

The skies over Bogor are currently overcast and more rain is expected. Budi said that the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted that the year'€™s rains would peak between now and the beginning of 2015. (dyl/nvn)
