urakarta Mayor FX Hadi Rudyatmo said on Monday that his administration would rebuild the fire-ravaged Klewer Market and hoped the central government would help finance it.

'€œWe will request assistance from the central government because our budget is inadequate,'€ Rudyatmo, better known as Rudy, said.

Rudy said the city budget was insufficient to cover the rebuilding of Central Java'€™s largest textile market given its size and the huge number of kiosks it housed.

Rudy'€™s plan is in accordance with a directive by Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, who conducted an inspection at the iconic textile market on Sunday evening.

Based on his observation, Ganjar said the market would be difficult to renovate and must be completely rebuilt. Some parts of the market collapsed during the fire, which raged for 30 hours from Saturday night.

Ganjar said the Central Java administration was ready to assist with the renovation budget and the building of a makeshift market. He added that he was also ready to discuss the issue in deliberations on adjustments to the state budget in February next year.

'€œNothing else can be done with the building except total reconstruction. For now, we are thinking about how the traders can start selling again by building a makeshift market,'€ said Ganjar.

Ganjar has advised Klewer traders to insure their goods next time, as only 10 percent of the kiosks at the market were covered by insurance.

Meanwhile, Vice President Jusuf Kalla visited Pasar Klewer on Monday afternoon and said he promised that the central government would help finance the reconstruction of the market.

Accompanied by Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani and Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa, Kalla said the reconstruction was expected to be finished in less than one year.

The two-story market, built by Surakarta ruler Pakubuwono X, measures 500-by-1,500 meters. Before the fire, it housed at least 2,320 kiosks, run by 1,532 traders and 765 small-time vendors.

Meanwhile, Surakarta Market Management Agency head Subagyo said that to house all the traders, a 4-hectare plot would be needed to build a temporary market.

'€œThe traders have requested that the temporary market be located close to Klewer Market, such as at Northern Surakarta Palace Square or Vastenburg Fort,'€ said Subagyo.

The square, located less than 100 meters from Klewer Market, is the main choice of the traders. However, according to Subagyo, the square, which measures about 2 hectares, could not accommodate all the traders. Consequently, the Surakarta municipality is considering the Vastenburg Fort area, which measures almost 5 hectares, for the temporary market location.

'€œThe Northern Square is apparently bigger than Klewer Market, which is only 1.8 hectares, but the market is two stories and it would be impossible to build a temporary two-story market for the traders,'€ said Subagyo.
