R Baruna Jaya I, a research vessel owned and operated by the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), departed from Pangkalan Bun'€™s Kumai Port at 3 p.m. to resume operations in assisting in the search for AirAsia flight QZ8501.

The head of the BPPT'€™s survey section, Handoko Manoto, said the Baruna Jaya I initially reached Kumai Port at 6 a.m. Friday to pick up satellite communications equipment and sonar devices along with additional personnel, after returning from search and rescue operations in the Karimata Strait.

The Baruna Jaya I joined the AirAsia flight QZ8501 search and rescue efforts on Thursday night, and is prepared to operate for 24 hours nonstop until the plane'€™s wreckage and black box are found.

'€œWith current weather conditions triggering 1- to 2-meter waves with a chance of light rain, the Baruna Jaya I will arrive at the search site at approximately 10 p.m. Friday, and will operate 24 hours nonstop,'€ Handoko said in a media statement sent from the Baruna Jaya command, control and operations center in Jakarta.

Handoko also noted that the BPPT would also operate a command center in Jakarta in order to process and disseminate around-the-clock information on Baruna Jaya I'€™s operations, in coordination with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).

He added that the ship and its crew were experienced and ready to conduct around-the-clock operations until the aircraft fuselage or black box was found.

The Baruna Jaya also previously participated in locating the 2007 Adam Air wreckage after the plane crashed off the coast of Sulawesi.

According to its website, BPPT operates four Baruna Jaya research vessels, each with its own speciality. The green Baruna Jaya I is designed for multipurpose deep-sea research.

The yellow Baruna Jaya II is for two-dimension sea seismic research, the blue Baruna Jaya III for oceanography and geology and the red Baruna Jaya IV for oceanography and fishery. (dyl/nvn)(++++)
