Manpower Minister Muhammad Hanif Dhakiri has revoked the licenses of 29 companies that have sent illegal migrants abroad.
'If any of the companies [that sent migrant workers] operate outside standard procedures, bordering on human trafficking, we will stop them,' he said during a visit to an Indonesian migrant worker shelter in Jenggi Utara village, West Nusa Tenggara, as quoted by detik.com.
He said tough actions would be taken against firms to protect migrant workers.
'I've been at my post for two months and I've shut down 29 companies that failed to comply with standard procedures. We are committed to improving the working conditions of Indonesian migrant workers and domestic workers,' said Hanif.
He said he did not want Indonesian workers becoming 'slaves' abroad.
Among others, Hanif said he tried to propose a way to expedite the passport-making process for migrant workers. (***)
