espite the end of financial assistance from the Social Affairs Ministry, the East Java provincial administration has said it is determined to close down 15 remaining red-light districts in the province.

Head of the East Java Social Affairs Agency Indra Wiragana said in Jakarta on Thursday that after closing 32 of 47 red-light districts with the financial assistance from the ministry in the past four years, the remaining 15 would follow suit this fiscal year.

'€œThere will be no more red-light districts in the province by the end of this year,'€ Indra said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Last year, the provincial government closed down the Dolly area in Surabaya, the biggest red-light district in Southeast Asia.

The 15 red-light districts were located in Nganjuk, Probolinggo, Lumajang, Jember and Ponorogo.

'€œAfter the Social Affairs Ministry stopped its financial assistance to the province, the closure of the remaining red-light districts will be fully covered by the provincial administration'€™s budget,'€ service and social rehabilitation section head Budi Yuwono said, adding that sex workers employed in the red-light districts would be obliged to attend training centers to allow them to take up other professions.(+++)
