Banten and West Papua have new police chiefs

N

ational Police chief Gen. Sutarman installed on Friday Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar and Brig. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw as the new police chief of Banten and West Papua, respectively.

Boy Rafli replaced Brig. Gen. M. Zulkarnaen, who has entered retirement age, while Waterpauw became the first chief of West Papua police, which had just been separated from Papua Police based in Manokwari.

In his inauguration speech, Sutarman ordered Boy Rafli to prepare for possible smuggling attempts in Banten, which linked the islands of Java and Sumatra.

"I order him to take necessary measures through intelligence supervision and cooperation with related stakeholders to create a conducive security situation in Banten," Sutarman said as quoted by Antara news agency.

He also ordered Boy Rafli to anticipate any possible threats that were feared to spark conflicts, due to religious differences.

Sutarman also ordered the two newly installed regional police chiefs to adapt to their new environments. "Just perform your role as well as possible and utilize all the existing resources of the organization," he added. (hhr)
