he Bogor Tengah sub-precinct police in Bogor, West Java, reported that four people were killed and 21 hurt as a tree fell in Bogor Botanical Gardens on Sunday.
Bogor Tengah police chief Comr. Viktor said the incident occurred in the park at 10 a.m. local time.
'The incident affected 25 visitors, four people died and 21 were injured,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Viktor said all the victims had been evacuated and brought to Bogor's Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Hospital to get medical treatment. Injured victims were taken to emergency service rooms while the deceased were brought to the forensic room of the hospital.
Viktor explained that among the deceased were three adults and one child. One victim died at the location while three others died at the hospital.
'Most of the victims suffered injuries on their heads. The victim who died at the park had a major head injury,' he said.
The incident began when workers of PT Asalta Mandiri Agung, Nanggewer, Bogor regency, held a family gathering at Bogor Botanical Gardens. A tree with a diameter of 1.5 meters suddenly fell on them when they were relaxing under a tent at the site.
Viktor said the tree was suspected to have been old and rotten. He said the police had handled the case and taken measures to prevent similar accidents from happening again. A police line was placed within a radius of 500 meters from the area of the incident.
'Bogor Botanical Gardens is still open for visitors. There is no temporary closure. Such an incident is likely to happen here because in Bogor, there are a lot of old and big trees. So people should keep on guard against tree falling incidents, especially during the rainy season. They should not frequently host activities in dangerous areas such as under big trees,' said Viktor.
