ndonesian Military (TNI) commander Gen. Moeldoko said that he would give 'extraordinary' rank promotions to Indonesian soldiers who participated in the search and rescue effort surrounding the AirAsia flight QZ8501 accident.
'I saw it myself how the soldiers fought so bravely, in harsh conditions. I have decided to award extraordinary promotions to some of my soldiers,' he said in Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan, as quoted by Antara news agency on Saturday.
He said he witnessed how difficult it was to transfer a tail section of the plane from naval vessel KRI Banda Aceh onto the deck of the Crest Onyx anchor handling vessel during high tide in the Karimata Strait.
He said that the extraordinary rank promotions had been given on the ship, and an official letter would soon follow to confirm the promotions.
Moeldoko said the soldiers had met the expectations of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the government and all Indonesian citizens.
He said the military was committed to all search and rescue activities, including recovering bodies and the search for the plane's black boxes. (***)
