Denis' wife, Dwi Retno Atik, read the letter from a location just off the notorious Nusakambangan prison island ahead of Denis' execution, which is scheduled for early Sunday morning.

"I personally apologize to all Indonesians and also President Jokowi if I had many mistakes during my life in Indonesia," the Malawi national said in the letter.

"I am a poor man who is broken and fallen and have failed to fight for my justice."

Retno fought back tears several times when reading the handwritten letter, which was given to her during a recent visit to the prison island that hosts seven penitentiaries.

"I have paid my dues for 14 years and I always tried to carry out good deeds although I have always been threatened with execution every time an election comes," Retno said as she read the letter from her husband.

Retno said she was distraught about the imminent execution, adding that the legal system was not fair in her husband's trial.

"Will this mass execution be a benchmark of the government's stern action or the start of a public crisis of trust?" she asked.

"Why does my husband, who was only a weak drug mule, have to be executed?"

Also to be executed on Nusakambangan Island are Dutchman Ang Kiem Soei, Indonesian Rani Andriani, Nigerian Daniel Enemuo and Brazilian Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira. Meanwhile, Vietnamese convict Tran Thi Bich Hanh will be executed in Boyolali, also in Central Java. Rani and Tran are female convicts. (nvn)
