he execution of Tran Thi Bich Hanh, a Vietnamese woman convicted on drug trafficking charges, drew the attention of Boyolali residents who packed the Boyolali Police's Brigade Mobile (Brimob) headquarters, which they had suspected to be the location of the execution early on Sunday.
Tran was executed at the Brimob's Detachment C in Gunung Kendil, Boyolali, at 12:46 a.m. local time on Sunday.
Heavy rains did not prevent local residents from gathering at the location of the execution, although they could not directly witness the killing, as it was held in a secluded area. Police personnel had attempted to disperse the crowd, but many residents refused to leave.
A volley of shots was heard at 12:46 a.m., Edi Purnomo, one of residents who chose to stay in the area, told The Jakarta Post.
'We heard a volley of gunfire; it was very loud,' said Edi, who went to the Brimob compound with his friends.
Journalists gathered at the Brimob headquarters had been given limited information about the execution. Shortly before the shooting, a procession of two trucks transporting security personnel was seen leaving the Brimob compound bound for the Boyolali Police precinct headquarters, triggering speculation that the execution was to occur at another location.
Only several minutes afterwards, local residents who were gathered at the Brimob headquarters reported that they heard a loud volley of gunfire from inside the compound.
At 3 a.m., a procession consisting of an ambulance guarded by two forward vehicles and an Avanza was seen leaving the Brimob compound and bound for Semarang.
Speaking to journalists after the execution, Boyolali regent Seno Samodro said he felt quite shocked when he was informed that his area would be the location of an execution. It was the first time for the regency to host such an event.
Seno said he hoped that Boyolali residents could learn from the execution that had just occurred in the regency.
'This makes history for Boyolali. Let's avoid and fight drugs,' he said. (ebf)(++++)
