etter known for its noted doubles players lately, badminton club PB Djarum has shifted its focus onto improving the skills of its men'€™s and women'€™s singles players.

'€œWe have committed with the coaches that this year we must focus on the singles events and we hope to see the results starting next year,'€ Djarum Foundation program director for sports Yoppy Rosimin said during a cash bonus ceremony for the club'€™s shuttlers on Monday.

Djarum has two singles shuttlers in the Badminton World Federation'€™s (BWF) top 50, namely men'€™s singles player Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, who is ranked 30th,, and women'€™s singles shuttler Maria Febe Kusumastuti, who is ranked 44th.

Being in the world top 50 earned them cash bonuses of Rp 60 million (US$4,800) and Rp 30 million, respectively.

Their rankings, however, were much lower than their club mates in the doubles section, including women'€™s doubles pair Vita Marissa and Shendy Puspa Irawati, who are 17th in the world; Muhammad Rijal and Vita Marissa, who are world No. 16; and Andrei Adistia, who along with partner Hendra Aprida Gunawan of the Sangkuriang Graha Sarana Elektrik Bandung club, are ranked 24th in the world.

The five doubles players each received a Rp 90 million cash bonus.

'€œWe will make some changes [to our training strategies]. One coach used to handle all 20 players, both male and female, so starting this year we will divide them into groups of 10 and each group will be handled by one coach,'€ said Djarum head coach Fung Permadi.

He said this year would mark the rebuilding period at the club that focuses on under-17 players.

'€œWe will assess their performances not only in terms of winning or losing, but also from their development in each competition and their attitude during training sessions,'€ Fung added.

Djarum is known for producing world-class shuttlers, including All England champions Liem Swie King in the men'€™s singles, Christian Hadinata in the men'€™s and mixed doubles events, 1992 Barcelona Olympic gold medalist Alan Budikusuma and 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Maria Kristin Yulianti in the women'€™s singles.

The club'€™s players, who won the 2014 national championships, also received an Rp 18 million cash bonus each. They are Tedi Supriadi/Angger Sudrajat in the men'€™s doubles, Marsheilla Gischa Islami/Rahmadhani Hastiyanti Putri in the women'€™s doubles and Jeka Wiratama/Marsheilla in the mixed doubles.

Marsheilla obtained another Rp 25 million bonus as the club'€™s young athlete achiever of 2014.

Hayom said he would try to improve his world ranking to break into the top 10, while Marsheilla was adopting the same aim for the world junior rankings.
