rand and marketing institute BMI Research predicts that the total value of Indonesian customers'€™ spending on online shopping will more than double to Rp 50 trillion (US$4 billion) this year from Rp 21 trillion last year.

'€œThe fact that current online shoppers are willing to repurchase and non online shoppers are willing to do purchases in the future, coupled with the growth of internet users in Indonesia, contribute to the significant jump of online shopping transactions this year,'€ BMI Research head of research Yoanita Shinta Devi said in Jakarta on Thursday on the sidelines of the 2015 Online Shopping Outlook event.

According to the Communication and Information Technology Ministry, 150 million out of 255.5 million people across the archipelago will have access to the internet this year.

Devi said that demographically 53 percent of online shoppers were women and 56 percent of them were 18 to 30 years old.

In addition, she revealed that a recent BMI Research survey showed that total online shopping transaction last year was Rp 21 trillion with the average spending per person per year at Rp 825,000.

The survey was conducted in 10 big cities nationwide including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Makassar and among 1,213 respondents, aged 18 to 45, from Dec. 1 to 10, 2014.

'€œForty one percent of the customers bought clothing products last year, the rest are gadgets, groceries, beauty products, airline tickets and hotel vouchers,'€ she added.

Moreover, according to the survey, OLX topped the list of online shopping websites that the customers were most aware of, followed by Lazada and berniaga.com in second and third place, respectively. (++++)
