overnor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama went on an impromptu visit on Friday to Pasar Induk Beras Cipinang (PIBC), the Cipinang Wholesale Rice Market, in East Jakarta.
Vendors enthusiastically greeted the governor and asked him to pose for pictures. Ahok also took the chance to stop in several kiosks and talk with the vendors.
'Excuse me, Bu, do we have enough rice?' he asked one, before jokingly asking if the rice was infested by weevils.
He also urged the vendors to refuse to pay illegal levies allegedly demanded by local thugs.
'Never pay any fee to thugs because it is illegal. In the future, all vendors in the markets must have debit cards, so the fees will be charged by the market management automatically each month,' he announced.
Before visiting the market, Ahok attended a shareholder's meeting at city-owned food security supplier PT Food Station Tjipinang
