he owner of a Harley Davidson motorcycle who fled when he was ticketed by traffic police on Jl. MH Thamrin on Jan. 18 surrendered himself to Jakarta Police on Thursday.
City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said the man had been identified as Yudi Hadi Kurnia, 43, a businessman from North Petukangan, Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta.
'He bought the motorcycle for Rp 150 million (US$12,038) without securing proper documents,' Martinus said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
He revealed that on the first day of the ban on motorcycles on Jl. MH Thamrin on Jan. 18, Yudi was looking for a parking spot at Plaza Indonesia. However, the parking lot for large motorcycles was being repaired and he was told by attendants to park in a building next to Grand Hyatt Hotel.
As he was passing Jl. MH Thamrin, Yudi was stopped by four traffic police officers, whereupon he was unable to show the proper vehicle documents. He then left his motorcycle on the street and walked to Grand Hyatt.
Martinus said Yudi returned 20 minutes later and agreed to the police's decision to bring his motorcycle to the Jakarta Traffic Police office in Pancoran, South Jakarta. As an officer prepared to escort him, Yudi suddenly sped off, driving to his home.
'The motorcyclist has been charged with violating Article 288 (1) of the 2009 law on traffic and land transportation for failing to show his vehicle documents,' Martinus said.
