House to ban lawmakers taking showbiz jobs

T

he House of Representatives is planning to ban lawmakers from taking side jobs in the entertainment industry amid a public outcry about lawmakers who appear on television outside of their legislative roles.

The ban has already been included in the draft of an ethical code regulation that is currently being discussed.

Golkar Party politician Tantowi Yahya, who was previously known as an emcee and country music singer, said he agreed with the ban as legislators should focus their work on realizing public aspirations.

'€œI agree. It is better that those who have been inaugurated as lawmakers [including entertainers] should leave their previous careers,'€ he said Tuesday at the House.

He said that it was improper for lawmakers, who are paid using taxpayers'€™ money, to appear in public for work outside of their assigned roles.

Several artists and musicians who have been inaugurated as lawmakers are still seen on television, taking advantage of their celebrity status to garner more advertising jobs and reality show roles.

National Mandate Party (PAN) politician Anang Hermansyah, previously known as a music producer and a jury member for a singing competition, recently came under fire for airing the birth of his child on a free-to-air television channel. (***)
