It was reported that Risaldi's phone, which he was using to record the interview, was snatched from his hand and destroyed angrily by some of the protesters. He was also beaten and kicked by members of the public, but was saved from further harm when the head of the neighborhood (RT) intervened.
A cameraman from the Tasindo TV Manokwari station, named Nadap, was also reportedly assaulted by protesters when he was crossing through the crime scene, receiving injuries that required him to be hospitalized.
The deputy editor-in-chief of the Harian Pagi Cahaya Papua Manokwari, Patrick Burumbun, said that Risaldi's beating and theft had been reported to the Manokwari police.
'We have reported the beating and the theft of our reporter's mobile phone to the police, with hope that the police will bring the perpetrators to justice,' Patrick said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He added that the case would also serve as a legal warning to the public against assaulting journalists. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
