Governor Basuki âAhokâ Tjahaja Purnama is considering allowing private cars to use the dedicated Transjakarta lanes
Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama is considering allowing private cars to use the dedicated Transjakarta lanes.
Ahok said he began to entertain the idea after listening to a friend's story. 'My friend says that out of the 10 times he's driven in busway lanes, he has only gotten ticketed once,' Ahok said on Saturday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The governor said thousands of cars used busway lanes illegally, but that police could only ticket a small number of them. It would be a lucrative source of income for the city if it allowed drivers to use the lanes for a fee, he added.
Ahok said he wanted the city to install automatic gates at the start of the lanes. Car owners who wanted to use the exclusive busway lanes would be required to place an e-money card on their dashboard, which would be charged every time they passed the gate.
'The system would be the same as electronic road pricing [ERP],' he said.
Ahok said the fees collected could be used to improve public transportation.
The city administration cooperated last year with the Jakarta Police and the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to impose a maximum fine of Rp 500,000 (US$39) on vehicles that illegally used Transjakarta lanes. (***)
