The question '€˜kapan kawin?'€™ (when are you going to get married?) is the bane of many singles'€™ lives.

So irritating has it become that an online movement emerged a few years ago urging people to stop asking the question, and pictorials suggesting witty answers to the question often go viral on social media.

The movie Kapan Kawin? concerns this societal phenomenon, wrapping it in the package of a romantic comedy to make it more interesting and, of course, saleable.

The protagonist, Dinda (Adinia Wirasti), has reached the ripe age of 33, and her mother Dewi (Ivanka Suwandi) is constantly urging her to marry.

Tired of being terrorized by Dewi'€™s nagging, Dinda, a career woman living in Jakarta, comes up with a plan to hire an actor to play her boyfriend.

She is introduced by her friend to street actor Satrio (Reza Rahadian), who agrees to go with her as a '€œhired boyfriend'€ to meet her parents in Yogyakarta.

But before they go, Dinda has to turn Satrio from a shabby street artist into the kind of slick go-getter that will please her parents.

Satrio'€™s efforts to play the role of Rio, Dinda'€™s boyfriend, have the audience creasing up at his facial expressions, witty comments and gestures.

Pleased that their daughter finally has a boyfriend, Dinda'€™s parents scheme to see if Rio, who claims to be a cosmetic surgeon, is good enough for her.

Gatot (Adi Kurdi), Dinda'€™s father, arranges scenarios through which to test Rio, with the fake boyfriend passing each one with charm and flying colors.

Dinda'€™s parents tell her that Rio is the right man for her and urge her to marry him. Disconcerted by this turn of events, Dinda tells Rio to make them hate him so they will take back their approval of him.

Dinda becomes more frustrated when she finds out that Rio has apparently agreed to the marriage plan.

During a family day out, Gatot forces Rio to propose to Dinda with a family ring that he gives him. The plan does not work out well; Rio loses the ring, and a furious Gatot orders him to leave Yogyakarta.

The plot then thickens.

The movie studies the real affection that grows between Dinda and Rio as they get to know each other better amid Dinda'€™s family'€™s drama, coupled with the truth about Dinda'€™s scheme coming to light.

Filmed mostly in Yogyakarta, the 115-minute film directed by Ody C. Harahap does a great job of highlighting the acting skills of its cast.

Reza'€™s role allows him room to explore his wide range of acting and even singing skills. Adinia is also very convincing as a stylish '€” thanks to Yogyakarta-based designer Lulu Lutfi Labibi'€™s clothes '€” and successful career woman distressingly adept as hiding her true feelings and emotions.

It is also nice to see Adi, famous for his part in the Keluarga Cemara soap opera, reprising his father-figure role.

However, the storyline takes a while to reach its climax. Some amusing but irrelevant scenes should have been cut.

Thanks to Citra Award winners Reza and Adinia, Kapan Kawin?, slated for release on Feb. 12 to
welcome Valentine'€™s Day, is, if nothing else, better than your average romcom.
