UNDP to launch disaster recovery management toolkit

he United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with the Tsunami Global Lessons Learned Project Steering Committee (TGLLP-SC) and the UN Office for REDD+ Coordination in Indonesia (UNORCID), will launch a toolkit for managing disaster recovery.
The Disaster Recovery Toolkit developed by the TGLLP-SC in partnership with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center offers a guide on how to implement and manage complex post-disaster recovery programs.
'Following the 2004 earthquake and Indian Ocean tsunami, as well as other disasters that occurred in Asia and the Pacific between 1993 and 2003, the international community prioritized gathering, learning and sharing from these experiences,' United Nations Information Center (UNIC) said in a press release on Saturday.
UNDP administrator Helen Clark, TGLLP-SC chair Kuntoro Mangkusubroto and UNORCID head Satya S.Tripathi will jointly launch the toolkit in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The TGLLP was launched in 2008 with support from the UN, the tsunami-affected countries and the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Clark launched the project's first results in 2009, alongside UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, former US President Bill Clinton and Mangkusubroto at the UN headquarters in New York.
The results included a global lessons learned study entitled The Tsunami Legacy: Innovation, Breakthroughs and Change, 2009, a Discovery Channel documentary, a study on the post-tsunami recovery in 2004 and, as a final outcome, the Disaster Recovery Toolkit for recovery practitioners.
The launch of the Disaster Recovery Toolkit takes place a month before the third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which will be held in Sendai City, Japan. (ebf)
