The incessant downpour on Sunday and Monday has flooded a number of areas, including arterial roads leading to the capital city.

The Jakarta Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded flooding on at least 49 roads in the city.

'€œThe incessant rain on Sunday through Monday morning has inundated at least 49 sections of road in the city,'€ head of the BPBD'€™s information and control section, Bambang Suryasaputra, said on Monday.

He said Central Jakarta was the worst hit, with floodwaters reaching between 30 centimeters and 60 centimeters in depth on 22 roads.

He said the inundation could cause traffic jams during rush-hour commute.

Affected roads in Central Jakarta are: Jl. MH Thamrin, Jl Cempaka Baru, Jl. Ahmad Yani, Jl. Kwitang, Jl. Majapahit, Jl. Budi Kemuliaan, Jl. Cempaka Putih Tengah, Jl. Krekot Raya, Jl. Percetakan Negara, Jl. Bungur, Jl. Batuceper, Jl. Senen Raya, Jl. Suprapto, Jl. Medan Mederka Barat and Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan.

Affected roads in West Jakarta: Jl. Daan Mogot, Jl Satria Jelambar, Jl. Kedoya, Jl. Panjang, Jl. Perjuangan, Jl. Patra Raya, Jl. Kiyai Tapa, Jl. Latumetten, Jl. S Parman, Jl. Hadiah, Jl. Kota Bambu and Jl. Kapuk Raya.

Affected roads in East Jakarta: Jl. Matraman, Jl. DI Panjaitan, Jl. Pramuka and Jl. Raya Bekasi.

Affected roads in North Jakarta: Jl. Yos Sudsarso, Jl. Kapuk Muara and Jl. Boulevard Artha Gading

Affected roads in South Jakarta: Jl. Haji Ipin and Jl. Fatmawati.

Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said in a press release that the downpour would continue all day Monday.

BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo said the flooding was mainly caused by poor drainage systems and trash in rivers that prevented the smooth flow of water. (rms)
