he Jakarta Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said residents of the capital city needed to be on alert as the water level at several monitoring posts had reached worrying levels.
'From our monitoring at 6:00 a.m. on the water level at three monitoring posts [the danger level] has reached the alarming level [Alert I status],' spokesman for BPBD Bambang Suryaputra said on Tuesday.
The three monitoring posts were located in Karet (South Jakarta), Pluit Dam (North Jakarta) and Angke Hulu (West Jakarta).
The water level at Karet was at 640 centimeters (cm), while at Angke Hulu it stood at 300 cm and at Pluit Dam 140 cm.
The water condition [high-water levels] is caused by incessant rain in all areas of the city,' Bambang said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Despite the recent flooding and the threat of more to come, Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has yet to declare a state of emergency in the capital city.
The BPBD also recorded that the water levels had reached 890 cm in Manggarai, Central Jakarta, and 200 cm in Pasar Ikan, North Jakarta.
'Under these conditions, all residents are expected to remain alert in anticipation of a possible disaster, especially in the areas worst affected by floodwaters,' he said, adding that the water level would increase further if it continued raining on Tuesday.
He called on residents to use the call center for questions related to emergency aid and logistical help. (rms) (***)
